서애 유성룡이 임진왜란을 헤쳐 나가면서 기록한 역사적 기록물이자 중수필이다. 여 기에는 전쟁의 원인서부터 전쟁이 전개되는 과정, 인물들의 평이 객관적으로 쓰여 있 다. 또 명나라가 개입해 어떤 도움을 주고 어떤 해를 입혔는지, 당시 장수들과 백성 들은 어떻게 난을 이겨나갔는지 생생하게 기록하고 있어 당시의 잘잘못을 평가하도록 함으로써 후세에 교훈을 주고 있다.

About the author

유성룡(柳成龍, 1542~1607): 호 서애(西厓). 1542년(중종 37) 10월, 아버지 유중영( 柳仲?, 1515~1573))과 어머니 안동 김씨 사이에서 둘째 아들로 태어남. 1558년 17세 때 세종대왕의 아들 광평대군의 5세손 이경의 딸과 혼인했다. 형은 유운룡(1539- 1601)이며 부친인 유중영은 1540년에 문과에 급제한 후 의주목사ㆍ황해도관찰사ㆍ예 조참의를 두루 거친 강직한 관료였다. 당시 이름이 없던무관, 이순신을 적극 중용하 도록 힘써 임진왜란이 일어나자 이순신 장군과 더불어 기울어 가는 나라를 구했고 벼 슬에서 물러난 뒤 노후에 후손들이 잊어서는 안되는 역사의 교훈을 적은 《징비록》 을 남겼다.
