올해 열여덟이 된 유약우는 청소를 매우 좋아한다는 점을 제외하면 평범한 환관이다. 청소 귀신이라 하여 ‘소귀자(掃鬼子)’라는 별명이 붙을 정도였지만, 사소한 일이었다. 어느 날, 황제의 개인 집무실과 침궁을 청소하던 환관이 과로로 실려 나간다. 이에 약우가 그 자리에 천거를 받는다. “그럼 어떤 이를 천거할 텐가?” 한 태감이 형형히 빛나는 눈으로 단호하게 입을 열었다. 오직 청소라면. 청소만 하는 거라면. “그렇다면...... 소귀자(掃鬼子)가 좋겠습니다.” 약우는 늘 하던 대로 부지런히 떨고 쓸고 닦으며 눈이 닿는 곳마다 번쩍번쩍하게 만든다. 황제, 이연은 환관의 청소 실력이 매우 만족스러우면서도 얼굴 한번 보이지 않는 미지의 그에게 호기심이 인다. 급기야 이연은 일부러 평소보다 일찍 돌아오고, 때마침 집무실을 청소하던 약우를 발견하는데-. “네놈이로구나.” “화, 황상을 뵈옵니다. 만세 만세 만만세.” “일어나거라.” 어디, 어떻게 생긴 놈인지 한번 보자.
