부채는 바람을 일으키는 도구로 여름철에 꼭 필요한 물건이다. 중국의 전통 부채 문화는 깊은 문화적 내포를 갖고 있다. 중국 문화의 집성 부분으로 죽(竹)문화, 도교문화, 유가문화와 밀접한 관계가 있다. 예로부터 중국은 ‘부채 왕국’이라고 불려왔다. 부채는 역사적으로 처음 ‘오명선(五明扇)’이라 불렀는데 우순(虞舜)이 만들었다고 한다. 진나라 최표(崔豹)의 고금주《古今注》에 오명선(五明扇)은 순(舜)이 만든 것이다. 요나라 선조로부터 견문을 넓히고 자기를 보좌하면서 일부러 오명선을 만들었다. 진조, 한조의 공경 사대부가 모두 쓸 수 있었다.
