5권 『나의 가장 나종 지니인 것』에는 1987년 1월에서 1994년 4월까지 발표되었던 작품들이 수록되어 있다. 여기에서는 가족의 죽음을 다루고 있는 작품이 네 개나 있는데 그중「여덟 개의 모자로 남은 당신」은 남편의 죽음을, 「나의 가장 나종 지니인 것」은 아들의 죽음을 담고 있다. 「나의 가장 나종 지니인 것」은 특이하게도 처음부터 끝까지 대화체로 되어 있는데 담담하게 이어가는 주인공의 목소리에서 가슴이 메어지는 슬픔을 느낄 수 있다.

About the author

1931년 경기도 개풍 출생. 서울대 문리대 국문과 재학중 한국전쟁을 겪고 학업을 중단했다. 1970년 불혹의 나이에 『나목(裸木)』으로 『여성동아』 장편소설 공모에 당선되어 문단에 나왔다.『부끄러움을 가르칩니다』『배반의 여름』『엄마의 말뚝』『그해 겨울은 따뜻했네』『꽃을 찾아서』『미망』 등 다수의 작품이 있고, 한국문학작가상(1980) 이상문학상(1981) 대한민국문학상(1990) 이산문학상(1991) 중앙문화대상(1993) 현대문학상(1993) 동인문학상(1994) 한무숙문학상(1995) 대산문학상(1997) 만해문학상(1999) 인촌상(2000) 황순원문학상(2001) 호암상(2006) 등을 수상했다. 2006년, 서울대 명예문학박사학위를 받았다.
