The History of the Hamburger

Few things are more American than hamburgers. However, the history of the hamburger is much longer than the history of America.
In the 13th century, the Mongols spread throughout Asia. During this time, Mongol fighters would put chopped-up meat under their saddles so that the meat became softer and easier to eat. The Mongols brought the dish to Russia. There, it became a favorite dish that’s known today as steak tartare. This is raw ground beef with a raw egg. By the 17th century, Russians had brought steak tartare to the port of Hamburg, Germany. The locals there had the idea to cook it. This dish became known as Hamburg steak.
By the mid-1800s, travelers from Hamburg had arrived on American shores with their popular local dish. In 1891, an American by the name of Oscar Weber Bilby held a Fourth of July party at his cow farm. He grilled patties of ground beef and put them on buns. Thus, the modern hamburger was born.

The world’s first burger chain, White Castle, opened in 1921. It became famous for its little square burgers, which sold for just five cents. McDonald’s came in 1940, and in the following years, the hamburger became an essential American dish. Today, Americans eat about fifty billion burgers a year, and the humble hamburger can be found all over the world.
Many different types of burger have been invented. Japan’s MOS Burger, for example, first sold burgers on a rice bun in 1985. In Korea, burgers are often topped with kimchi. In Australia, a “burger with the lot,” or one with everything, comes with pineapple, beet, egg, and bacon. Canada is home to the hot Hamburg sandwich, which is a burger that’s covered with gravy and served with peas.
From the fields of Mongolia to the grill at your local burger place, the burger has stood the test of time. Wherever you are, just get a burger, and you’re good to go!
世上第一個漢堡連鎖店「白堡」（White Castle）於一九二一年開業。它是以方形的小漢堡而聞名，這種漢堡只賣五分錢。麥當勞（McDonald¡¦s）在一九四○年問世，而在接下來幾年間，漢堡成為不可或缺的美式料理。今天，美國人一年大約會吃五百億個漢堡，而不起眼的漢堡在世界各地隨處可見。
