Das Handbüchlein der stoischen Moral wurde von Epiktets Schüler Arrianus zusammengestellt aus Mitschriften, die dieser bei Epiktets mündlichen Ausführungen und Vorträgen angefertigt hatte. Epiktet kam früher selbst als Sklave nach Rom und konnte sich mit Erlaubnis seines Herrn die Vorträge des stoischen Philosophen Gaius Musonius Rufus anhören. Nach seiner Freilassung begann Epiktet selbst, als stoischer Philosoph zu lehren. Er erlangte schon zu Lebzeiten hohes Ansehen und ist neben Seneca und Marc Aurel einer der wichtigsten Vertreter der späteren Stoa. Der Gedanke aus Epiktets Satz "Nicht die Dinge selbst beunruhigen die Menschen, sondern die Vorstellungen von den Dingen" wird bis heute oft zitiert.
About the author
Epiktet war ein antiker Philosoph. Er wurde um 50 n.Chr. in Hierapolis in Phrygien geboren und versarb um 138 in Nikopolis in Epirus.
