Die Automate ist eine Erzählung von E. T. A. Hoffmann, die in der Zeit vom 5. bis 15. Januar 1814 entstand. 1819 kam der Text in der Erzählungssammlung "Die Serapionsbrüder" heraus. Kempelens Schachtürke hat wahrscheinlich Modell für E. T. A. Hoffmanns intelligenten Automaten gestanden. Dem fragmentarischen Textcharakter entsprechend gab sich die zeitgenössische Literaturkritik zumeist ratlos. Dem Interpreten im heutigen Automatenzeitalter geht es nicht anders. Also sollte das Schwergewicht der Auslegung vielleicht auf den musikinstrumententheoretischen Part der kleinen Erzählung gelegt werden.
About the author
Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann (1776-1822) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller der Romantik. Außerdem wirkte er als Jurist, Komponist, Kapellmeister, Musikkritiker, Zeichner und Karikaturist. Hoffmanns heute bekanntes Werk entstand in einer Zeitspanne von dreizehn Jahren. Dass er erst so spät das Bekenntnis zur Schriftstellerei wagte, ist seiner ursprünglichen Präferenz für die Musik zuzuschreiben, Hoffmann fühlte sich eher zum Komponisten berufen.
