바스러지는 과거, 잃어버린 삶의 흔적으로 대표되는 생의 근원적 모호함을 신비로운 언어로 탐색해온 현대 프랑스 문학의 거장. 1945년 불로뉴 비양쿠르에서 태어났다. 열여덟 살 때부터 글쓰기를 시작해 1968년 소설 『에투알 광장』으로 로제 니미에상, 페네옹상을 받으며 화려하게 데뷔했다. 『외곽 순환도로』로 1972년 아카데미 프랑세즈 소설 대상을, 『슬픈 빌라』로 1976년 리브레리상을, 1978년에는 『어두운 상점들의 거리』로 프랑스의 가장 권위 있는 문학상인 공쿠르상을 수상했다. 데뷔 이후 발표하는 작품마다 평단과 독자들의 찬사를 받았으며, 주요 작품으로 『청춘 시절』 『추억을 완성하기 위하여』 『팔월의 일요일들』 『도라 브루더』 『신원 미상 여자』 『작은 보석』 『한밤의 사고』 『혈통』 『잃어버린 젊음의 카페에서』 『지평』 등이 있다. 2014년 노벨문학상을 수상했다.
