《명심보감》은 누가 만들었고, 누가 서문과 발문을 써서 추천하였는지 하는 문제를 떠나서 이미 그 진가가 독자들에게 인식되고 있다. 더구나 요즘처럼 가정교육이 소홀하고 가족관계가 소원해지는 시대에, 그래도 부모들이 《명심보감》의 이름을 기억하고 자녀들에게 사줄 정도로 이 책은 그 생명을 유지하고 있다. 방학 때에는 중?고등학교에서 필독서로 권장하고 있으며, 곳곳에서 한문강독교재로 선택되어 읽혀지기도 한다. 범입본이 사람들의 수양에 도움이 되는 글들을 많은 책에서 뽑아 엮은 것이 바로 《명심보감》의 원본이다. 그러나 이 원본은 너무 큰 책이기에 우리나라에서는 고려시대 충렬왕 때에 추적(秋適)이 새로 간추려 엮은 초략본이 널리 읽혔다. 그 내용은 착한 행실을 권면한 계선편으로부터 부녀자의 행실을 가르치는 부행편에 이르기까지 모두 19편 263장이고 여기에 나중에 덧붙인 증보편이 5편이다.
