서울대학교 고고미술사학과를 졸업하고 영국 런던 유니버시티 칼리지에서 박사학위를 받았다. 르네상스 회화를 사회경제적 맥락에서 접근한 박사학위 논문 은 베네치아 상인들의 체험이 어떻게 당대 회화 속에 반영됐는지를 분석한 것이다. 그간 학회지를 통해 다수의 논문을 발표하였으며《신미술사학》(시공사, 1998), 《조토에서 세잔까지-서양회화사》(시공사, 2000) 등의 번역서를 냈다. 현재 한국예술종합학교 미술원 미술이론과 교수로 있다.
