고려대학교에서 심리학을 공부하며 소설을 썼다. 선인들, 그중에서도 조선 후기를 살았던 인물들의 삶과 사상에 지대한 관심을 갖고 있다. 그들이 생각하고 열망했던 것들을 이 시대의 언어로 재현하는 것이 앞으로의 꿈이다. 지은 책으로 《연암이 나를 구하러 왔다》 《추사의 마지막 편지, 나를 닮고 싶은 너에게》 《칼날 눈썹 박제가》 《책의 이면》 《연암에게 글쓰기를 배우다(공저)》 《소년, 아란타로 가다》 《퇴계에게 공부법을 배우다》 《나는 가짜 엄택주입니다》 《책을 뒤쫓는 소년》 등이 있다. 조선의 문장가 이옥과 김려가 나눈 우정 이야기를 그린《멋지기 때문에 놀러 왔지》로 2010년 제1회 창비청소년도서상을 받았다.
