이별하는 골짜기, 라는 애잔한 이름을 가진 산골 역 '별어곡(別於谷)'이라는 역을 중심으로 네 번의 계절 동안의 이야기를 담고 있다. 마을 다방의 아가씨의 죽음을 마음에 담고 있는 막내 역무원, 아내의 죽음에서 벗어나지 못하는 늙은 역무원, 끔찍한 과거를 잊고 늘 어디론가 떠나려 차표를 모으는 가방 할멈, '음악이 있는 베이커리'를 운영하는 젊은 여자가 서로의 이야기 안에서 스치면서, 자신만의 이야기를 풀어놓는다. 각자의 이야기 안에서의 '죽음'이라는 모티프가 별어곡이라는 역 이름과 자연스럽게 어울린다.

About the author

저자 : 임철우 1981년 「개도둑」으로 서울신문 신춘문예에 당선되어 문단에 나왔으며, 소설집으로 『아버지의 땅』(1984), 『그리운 남쪽』(1985), 『달빛밟기』(1987), 장편소설로 『붉은 산, 흰 새』(1990), 『그 섬에 가고 싶다』(1991), 『등대』(1993), 『봄날』(1998), 『백년여관』(2004) 등이 있다. 한국일보 창작문학상(1985), 이상문학상(1988), 단재상(1998), 요산문학상(2005)을 수상하였으며, 현재 한신대 문예창작학과 교수로 재직중이다.
