‘그’는 대명사(代名詞)다. ‘그’는 남자를 지칭하는 인칭대명사(人稱代名詞)다. 그 사내, 그 작자, 그이, 그 놈 등등. ‘그’는 인간 이외의 모든 사물을 지칭하는 물질(物質代名詞)다. 그 꽃. 그 바위. 그 물방울. 그 칼 등등. 지금부터 거론되는 ‘그’는 어떤 한 존재를 가리키는 제삼의 대명사(第三代名詞)다. 왜 이런 머릿설명(頭說)이 우선돼야 하는지에 대해선 그 나름대로 이유가 있다. ‘그’는 인간(人間)이 아니다. 그렇다고 완벽한 악마(惡魔)도 아니다. 인간도 아니고, 악마도 아닌 존재. 그래서 ‘그’라는 제삼의 대명사로 표기(表記)하기로 했다.
