2002년 매일신문 신춘문예에 「새들은 북국으로 날아간다」를 발표하며 시단에 나온 이향 시인의 첫 시집 『희다』(문학동네시인선047)가 출간되었다. 11년 전 시인은 "첫 도전에 덜컥 당선이라니. 나는 너무 쉽게 나비가 된 것 아닌가", "막 첫잠에서 깨어난 애벌레에 불과"한 시인으로서 "말의 집 한 채를 세우기 위해 조급하게 우왕좌왕하지는 않겠다"라고 소회를 밝혔다. 시인이 첫 시집 『희다』를 출간하기까지 걸린 11년의 시간을 두고, 길다거나 짧다고 간단히 평하기는 그래서 쉽지 않다. 다만 "잃어버린 목탑을 세우는 마음으로 한 층 한 층 탑을 쌓아올리고 싶"었다는 시인의 다짐이 『희다』라는 견고한 결실을 맺은 것만은 분명해 보인다.

1964년 경북 감포에서 태어났다. 계명대학교 대학원 문예창작학과를 졸업했으며, 2002년 매일신문 신춘문예로 등단했다.
