그렇다면 양자(Quantum)는 무엇일까? 어떤 물리량이 연속 값을 취하지 않고 어떤 단위량의 정수배(또는 半整數倍)로 나타나는 비연속적인 값을 취할 경우, 그 단위량이라는 사전적 의미를 갖는다. 양자는 말 그대로 작은 에너지 알갱이를 말하는 것이다. 지금은 이렇게 쉽게 말할 수 있지만 빛이 입자인지, 파동인지도 확신할 수 없었던 그 당시 과학자들에게 양자는 전혀 새로운 개념이었다. 그런 개념을 통합시키고 양자의 개념을 증명한 과학자가 바로 막스 플랑크이다.
