손창섭 소설의 현장은 삶과 죽음이 교차하는 벼랑 끝이다. 전쟁 직후의 절박한 상황이 그것이다. 손창섭의 전후 사회 인식은 경제적인 궁핍과 사랑의 결핍이다. 그 결핍은 다시 정신적인 결핍과 육체적인 불구로 요약된다. 그의 소설은 전후 사회의 결핍 그 자체에 대한 한 폭의 음화다. 그나마 그것도 인화지에 잘 현상된 사진이 아니라, 아직은 병리적인 관찰과 희화화된 인물로 남겨진 한 폭의 네거티브 필름일 뿐이다.
