남궁세가(南宮世家). 이 남궁세가는 강소성(江蘇省)의 고도인 금릉(金陵)의 외곽 종산(鐘山)의 기슭에 위치하면서 이미 수백 년간이나 강호상에서 드높게 전통과 명성을 누리면서 면면히 전해져 내려온 검문세가(劍門世家)였다. 강호 무림의 오대세가(五大世家) 가운데에서도 수위(首位)를 차지한다고 하는 그곳은 그야말로 명실공히 정파무림(正派武林)을 떠받치는 얼마 되지 않는 기둥들 가운데의 하나라고 아니할 수가 없는 곳이었다. 그런데 어느 날 뜻밖에도 이 남궁세가에 하나의 작은 사건이 벌어지게 되었다. 그리고 그로 인해서 이 남궁세가의 역사 속에서도 그다지 흔치 않은 일인, 이제 마악 약관(弱冠)의 나이에 들어서 있는 한 명의 세가 내의 소공자(少公子)가 가주(家主)의 지위에 오르는 일이 벌어지게 되었다.
