About the author
1941년 일본 오사카에서 태어나, 전남 순천에서 성장했다.
서울대 불문과를 졸업했다. 1962년 한국일보 신춘문예에 단편 「생명연습生命演習」이 당선되어 작품활동을 시작한 후, 파괴된 우리 역사의 끄트머리를 당대의 시각에서 탁월하게 재구성하는 독특한 작품들을 선보였다.
1965년 단편 「서울 1964년 겨울」로 동인문학상을, 1977년 단편 「서울의 달빛 0章」으로 이상문학상을 수상하는 등 각별한 주목을 받아온 김승옥의 소설은 또한 후배 소설가들에게 많은 영향을 끼친 것으로도 유명한데, 감각적인 문체, 언어의 적확한 사용, 배경과 인불의 적절한 배치, 그리고 치밀한 완결성으로 우리 현대소설의 한 모범을 보여주었기 때문이다.
