줄거리 주인공인 ‘나’는 소년 시절 우연히 영주의 저택을 방문하게 된다. 그 저택에서 병약하게 태어나 평생을 병상에서 지내야 하는 ‘마리아’라는 여인을 만나 사랑을 나눈다. 그러나 두 남녀 주인공을 통해 드러내고 있는 사랑에 대한 성찰은 결코 단순하지가 않다. 타인과 타인이 만나 서로를 어떻게 인식하고 받아들여야 하는지, 또한 어떤 방식으로 서로를 사랑해야 하는지에 대한 깨달음이 작품 속에 녹아 들어가 있다. 한마디로 작품 전체가 사랑의 본질에 대해 정의를 내리고 있다.
