About the author
존 웨슬리 웨슬리는 아버지 SAMUEL WESLEY 목사의 15번째 아들로 태어났다. 어머니의 엄격한 교육을 받으며 자란 그는 옥스퍼드 대학에서 학사, 석사학위를 취득했다. THOMAS A KEMPIS의 「그리스도를 본받아」와 JEREMY TAYLOR의 「거룩한 삶」「거룩한 죽음」을 탐독하고, 아버지를 도와 목사보로 사역을 시작했다. 1728년 국교회 사제로 안수받고, 1729년에 옥스퍼드 대학에서 강사와 연구원들을 모아 ‘HOLY CLUB’을 조직하여 엄격한 훈련을 하는데 여기서부터 METHODIST라는 조소를 받기도 했다. 미국 식민지 목회를 위해 도미하던 중 배 안에서 경건주의자 모라비안 신앙인들에게 큰 감동을 받고, 모라비안 지도자 PETER BOHLOR와 2년간 교제하면서 종교적인 열정, 구원의 확신, 선교에 대한 열정을 키워갔다. 1738년부터 부흥강사로 활동하기 시작하여 매년 4천 마일을 여행하며 복음전도 사역에 심혈을 기울이며, “세계는 나의 교구다”라는 유명한 말을 남겼다.
