「어머니」는 1924년 5월까지 시대일보에 연재됐던 나도향의 장편소설이다. 일본 유학까지 다녀온 엘리트 여성인 ‘영숙’은 돈을 바라는 어머니의 강요로 철수의 첩이 되어 모멸감에 시달린다. 철수와의 사이에 아이까지 얻은 영숙은, 어느날 우연히 고향 친구와 만나 그에게 호감을 느끼게 된다. 그리고 이로 인해 첩이라는 봉건적 신분에 괴로워하던 개인의 자아와 딸을 둔 어머니로서의 자아가 충돌하게 된다. 이 같은 시도는 한국 근대문학에서 최초라 할 수 있다.

About the author

나도향 (1902-1926) 나도향은 양의사인 아버지의 뒤를 이어 1918년 경성의학전문학교에 입학했으나, 문학에 뜻을 두고 중퇴, 일본으로 건너가 본격적인 집필 활동을 시작했다. 그러나 가업을 잇지 않는다는 이유로 나도향의 문학 활동을 반대하던 조부가 독립운동에 가담하면서 가세가 기울게 된다. 조부의 생활비 원조 중단으로 1920년, 학비가 부족해진 나도향은 결국 귀국하게 된다. 이후 25세의 젊은 나이에 폐결핵으로 요절하기 전까지 주로 애정 윤리를 주제로 한 감상적이며 낭만적 분위기의 작품들을 다수 남겼다.
