희미한 조명이 드리운 넓은 무도회장은 수려하게 차려입은 사람들로 가득했다. 춤을 추는 이들, 술을 마시는 이들, 대화를 나누는 이들, 애정을 나누는 이들…… 그들은 제각기 파티를 즐기고 있었다. 장미의 잎, 엉겅퀴, 토끼풀 레이스가 곱게 수놓아진 아이보리색 드레스를 입은 나는 하얀 깃털 가면을 쓰고 주변을 둘러보았다. ‘빈 숲 속의 이야기’ 선율이 홀 중앙에서 울려 퍼져 그쪽으로 사뿐사뿐 걸어가니 여러 커플들이 음악에 맞추어 춤을 추고 있었다. 흥겨운 광경에 흠뻑 젖어 있다가 누군가의 따가운 시선이 느껴져 고개를 돌렸다. 검정색 턱시도를 입고 화려하면서도 정갈한 가면으로 눈 주위를 가린 묘령의 남자가 나를 응시하고 있었다. 그는 뚜렷한 이목구비에 넓은 가슴팍을 가진 건장한 남자였다. “Bonjour, mademoiselle.”
