本書以「愛的文化政治」為題，指出「現代愛」是一項眾人參與塑造的文化工程，且此一工程永遠都在進行中。透過系譜式閱讀分析殖民時期台灣與朝鮮生產之文學作品與大眾論述，探究「現代愛」的歷史建構與殖民遺緒，同時提出以台韓互為參照為比較方法，彰顯並挑戰東亞地緣政治問題。本書亦將「殖民親密關係」定義為「以愛為名、透過殖民權力運作而產生的新型態社會關係」。這一權力關係透過「愛」的各種歷史時間逐一體現，包含：翻譯與文學如何共構「愛的制度化」，資本主義發展初期造就「愛的戀物化」，現代化科技資本發展下殖民生活中的「殆盡之愛」，以及前述機制造就「同性愛」、「殉情」這兩組現代愛的變異。而最終回到當代社會檢視這一殖民之愛及其遺緒，進一步探討「愛的去殖民」之可能路徑。
