1914年出生於江蘇蘇州，就讀於燕京大學經濟系，畢業後考入國民黨政府財政部下屬上海直接稅局工作。1949年後留用。1951年1月以「匪特罪」被拘捕，判刑12年，刑滿後留在勞改農場「繼續改造」，直至1981年冤案獲得平反。平反後作者在北京建立了家庭。曾擔任過大英百科全書中文版的審校工作及英文教學工作。平生喜愛旅遊、讀書、下棋、收集石頭。晚年健康安樂，已逾百歲而頭腦清晰，腳力尚健。
