布希亞認為，後現代社會的特徵表現在符號消費社會的來臨，「為了成為消費的對象，一個客體必須先成為符號。」人所消費的不是物自身，而是物背後隱藏的象徵符號。於是，在資本主義市場邏輯的引導下，人耽溺於符號，而符號本身是武斷、飄盪、流動、拼貼、蔓延的。人與人之間的互動也是價值與意義被中空化的象徵交換，其決定原則是正負情愫交融的心理狀態。?
