「活道」课程系列把约翰福音和约翰壹、贰、叁书编在同一册内，一方面是由于教会传统一向认为它们的作者皆为使徒约翰，另一方面是因为它们的写作风格和神学思想，都是相当一致的。
约翰福音是新约圣经四卷福音书中的第四卷，也是比较独特的一卷。它在取材、经文结构以至演绎方法等各方面，都与前三卷福音书有所区别。相对于马太、马可和路加三卷福音书，约翰福音记载耶稣所行神蹟的篇幅较少（只记载了耶稣受死之前所行的七个神蹟），而是把重点放在耶稣的教训和讲论上。本课程的设计也尽量顾及约翰福音的这些特色，希望循着这个方向，引导学员掌握与这卷福音书相关的核心信息和教导。
