宏智正覺禪師倡導的默照禪，是「從體出用」、大止大觀的祖師禪法。 「默」是指諸法本性空寂，「默照」就是從性上起妙照的作用，去照見我們的心性本來空寂、如如不動。雖然如如不動，卻能有種種的智 慧妙用，能夠「機轉化分， 歷世應事」、「轉身就位，借路著腳」，而能「應其身現其相，而為說法」。 也就是說，自性清淨，方法清淨，所證亦清淨；自性如是，方法如是，所證亦如是。
