收錄在本書的八篇論文，主要議題集中在唐代的詩文、詩話領域。每一篇都曾在正式期刊發表，或者先在國際、國內學術研討會上宣讀，最後在港台或中國大陸的學報正式發表。包含唐代詩人李頎、張籍、姚合等人的詩學探討，以及針對《韓詩臆說》、王禮卿《遺山論詩詮證》、張戒《歲寒堂詩話》、張戒《讒書》等詩評專著的進一步考究與品評。
「涵虛書室」這個雅致書名的來源，乃出自於作者因多次遷居，不得不將歷年收集之珍貴圖書大量贈送學生、或慨贈學界同仁。然而在偶然的機緣下，認識一位後學，承蒙對方慨贈15萬筆以上數位學術資料。加上原本多年收藏的數位圖書，於是作者從一個幾乎無以為繼的「圖書貧戶」，突變為富有的「藏書家」，不僅過去送出去的資料重新獲得，而且也因圖書資料無虞匱乏，重燃學術研究之熱忱。此「書室」包含了十幾塊高容量的「移動硬碟」以及網路「雲端空間」，時常仰賴平板電腦閱讀基本資料，稱為「涵虛」，誠不為過矣！
