红河州位于云南省南部，地处云贵高原西南部哀牢山系，区内山高谷深坡陡、地质条件较差、河道蜿蜒曲折，境内的水库大坝以土石坝为主，相应的泄水建筑物主要采用岸边式溢洪道。对具有下泄水头高、下游河道弯曲、单宽流量大等特点的溢洪道，在设计过程中，根据规程规范以及相关理论计算采用的计算参数与实际可能存在一定的误差，其布置和结构设计甚至可能影响到整个工程的安全。本书结合工程实例，根据实测地形条件，通过水工模型试验，分析论证对溢洪道的结构安全影响较大的泄流能力、水面线情况、弯道水流条件、是否会产生空蚀、消能措施是否满足要求等，优化溢洪道的布置及结构设计，确保方案合理性。本书内容简单实用，注重理论与实践结合的紧密性，为红河州及相似地区溢洪道的设计和施工提供参考帮助。
全书共五章，内容包括溢洪道的作用与研究、溢洪道设计方案及模型构建、原设计方案试验分析、优化方案试验分析、分析结论及建议。第一章由张学森、母龙帮编写，第二章由张学森、曹芝花、何春云编写，第三章由曹芝花、秦春岭、谢菱编写，第四章由母龙帮、何春云、陈程编写，第五章由谢菱、母龙帮编写，全书由张学森负责统稿。
