大学证释 列圣齐述

复圣序例

 

夫子此次证释大学,其误处自当改正。然相沿已久,世人不明其故。 夫子虑或有疑,命于正误处详加述明,并将原本对列互勘,使人易明。至其章节本未分,后人虽别为各章,于圣人原旨未合。但叙其次第,无庸分作几章,使人知一贯之义。

 

盖道一而已,用之明德则德明;用之止善则善至。其详略有差,其本末一致。如必分章节,则非将略者详之,缺者补之不可。且修身以外之事,皆明德之见于事者。而本于格、致、诚、正。若分言之,遂疑详于事,而略于内。岂圣人之原旨乎?故,格、致虽若明德之最初工夫;治、平虽若明德之最终工夫,而实则治、平亦格、致之事也。

 

盖格致言其学;治平言其用。学以致用,无初、终也。故诚、正、修、齐,看是异趣,而皆一道,道无二致。故,诚、正即可致修、齐。其必分诚正与修齐为二,则诚正何用乎?故,次第言之则可;若分别之则不可。本无可分别而强分之,则人每忘其本,而以修齐治平为务,竟不复置意于格致诚正也。岂圣人之意乎?

 

故读是经当知纲领有四,其后皆就纲领推而明之。当知明明德为用,而格致诚正修齐治平,皆明明德之事也。当知止至善为体,而定静安虑得,皆止至善之境也。当知亲亲、新民为仁治之本末,而修齐治平,皆亲亲、新民之功也。当知明明德为道之用;亲亲、新民为道之则;止至善为道之极则。

 

大学之教,道也。学者,亦道也。道外无教,亦无学也。则明明德也、亲亲也、新民也、止至善也,皆道之所固有。圣人本道而挈之,以教人耳!当知四者为道之全,不可缺一。道见于人谓之性。性者,生之本。则行此四者,即以明道,以尽性,以全生也。故动静行止、持己对人、处家理国,皆本此道也。充此性也、养此生也。不足者,自亏其道,悖其性、扰其生也。

 

故凡书中所述,无非本此旨而示其方;立其教而定其则。故明此者,则知圣人之意,而知大学之为大学,儒教之为儒教。虽修目并列,章节统贯,无他义也。
