大學證釋 列聖齊述

復聖序例

 

夫子此次證釋大學,其誤處自當改正。然相沿已久,世人不明其故。 夫子慮或有疑,命於正誤處詳加述明,並將原本對列互勘,使人易明。至其章節本未分,後人雖別為各章,於聖人原旨未合。但敘其次第,無庸分作幾章,使人知一貫之義。

 

蓋道一而已,用之明德則德明;用之止善則善至。其詳略有差,其本末一致。如必分章節,則非將略者詳之,缺者補之不可。且修身以外之事,皆明德之見於事者。而本於格、致、誠、正。若分言之,遂疑詳於事,而略於內。豈聖人之原旨乎?故,格、致雖若明德之最初工夫;治、平雖若明德之最終工夫,而實則治、平亦格、致之事也。

 

蓋格致言其學;治平言其用。學以致用,無初、終也。故誠、正、修、齊,看是異趣,而皆一道,道無二致。故,誠、正即可致修、齊。其必分誠正與修齊為二,則誠正何用乎?故,次第言之則可;若分別之則不可。本無可分別而強分之,則人每忘其本,而以修齊治平為務,竟不復置意於格致誠正也。豈聖人之意乎?

 

故讀是經當知綱領有四,其後皆就綱領推而明之。當知明明德為用,而格致誠正修齊治平,皆明明德之事也。當知止至善為體,而定靜安慮得,皆止至善之境也。當知親親、新民為仁治之本末,而修齊治平,皆親親、新民之功也。當知明明德為道之用;親親、新民為道之則;止至善為道之極則。

 

大學之教,道也。學者,亦道也。道外無教,亦無學也。則明明德也、親親也、新民也、止至善也,皆道之所固有。聖人本道而挈之,以教人耳!當知四者為道之全,不可缺一。道見於人謂之性。性者,生之本。則行此四者,即以明道,以盡性,以全生也。故動靜行止、持己對人、處家理國,皆本此道也。充此性也、養此生也。不足者,自虧其道,悖其性、擾其生也。

 

故凡書中所述,無非本此旨而示其方;立其教而定其則。故明此者,則知聖人之意,而知大學之為大學,儒教之為儒教。雖修目並列,章節統貫,無他義也。
