出自四十華嚴（大方廣佛華嚴經），《華嚴經》是經中之王，而其歸結在《普賢行願品》，而《普賢行願品》歸結又在於淨土。所以印光大師把這卷經特別提出，和《阿彌陀經》、《觀無量壽佛經》、《無量壽經》、《楞嚴經大勢至菩薩念佛章》並行，稱為淨土五經，再加上往生論，成為淨土五經一論。
