謹慎之所以為謹慎，關鍵在於它具有嚴肅性，嚴肅比耍小聰明更容易獲得尊重。總是喜歡開玩笑的人難臻完美，且容易成為笑柄。我們把他看成說謊的人，絕不相信他。我們一方面害怕受他的騙，另一方面更怕受到他的訕笑。人們從來就弄不清楚好開玩笑的人究竟什麼時候才是在說正經話，這種情況差不多等於他沒有什麼正經話可講。最壞的幽默無過於那種無休無止的幽默。有的人因風趣而得名聲，卻又最後因此失掉了風趣。開玩笑的時候當然也應該有，但別的時候應當嚴肅認真。
