金尚德著作的《百年立霧溪：太閣橫貫道路開拓史》，講述這條貫穿太魯閣峽谷道路的開拓史，並提到其中一段路在歷史中曾是「太魯開產金道路」，在日治時期因採金而開建，並詳述這條路線的演變史。這讓我產生想走一次以這些歷史故事所串接的橫貫台灣東進路線，東半段就是以合歡越嶺道為軸，以探索產金、發電、太魯閣族相關景點或史蹟的主題式深度遊路線，而終點就設在濁水溪出海口。
