《儒林外史》是中國第一部以諷刺為宗旨的長篇小說，全書共五十六回，約作於吳敬梓四十歲至五十歲時，正是他歷經家境的劇變而深悉世事人情的時期。全書圍繞著反對科舉制度的主題，描寫此制度的腐朽黑暗，陋儒的虛假迂腐，官吏的貪吝可鄙，諷刺筆法含蓄委婉、輕重得宜。作者並且透過民間口語，以樸素、幽默、本色的語言，描繪出一幅活生生的社會面貌圖，如惺園退士所云：「摹繪世故人情，真如鑄鼎象物，魃魅魍魎，畢現尺幅。」然本書非以一人一事為主，結構較鬆散，魯迅謂之：「如集諸碎錦，合為帖子。雖非巨幅，而時見珍異。」對清朝晚期小說有很大影響。
