西元前21世紀（一說西元前22世紀），中國已經建立了擁有強大軍事力量的奴隸制王朝夏朝。後來夏朝的統治越來越腐朽，遭到其他部族的反抗，其中「商」強大起來，爆發了爭奪統治權的「鳴條之戰」，這是史料中較為明確的上古戰爭之一。鳴條之戰的結果是商部族獲勝，推翻了夏王朝，建立了「商」王朝。商代的軍事力量相比夏朝有了更進一步的發展，尤其是青銅冶煉水準的進步，為兵器的進步提供了優良的材質。不過，商代青銅的冶煉水準雖然已經成熟，但是並未大規模地用青銅兵器裝備軍隊，真正廣泛使用青銅兵器的時代是西周和春秋時期，並一直和鐵質兵器共同使用，持續到漢初才徹底被鐵兵器所替代。
