這是一本關於魏晉風俗與文化的入門書，藉由對魏晉時期風行的思想與文化之分析，一則對現今世人對魏晉文化的偏頗認識做出說明與解釋，使大眾瞭解魏晉士人的任誕之行與當時特殊風俗的產生，有其時代的背景因素，與不得不的無奈緣由，而能對當時的文化現象有著較清楚且全面的認識。再則說明魏晉士人處於時代苦難與社會崩解中，仍試圖找出足以立身與依附的價值觀，作為人生的指標。與現今社會做一比對，世人所苦之事，古今皆同。由古證今，可發現哲學思想的產生，在於解決世人生活中所遭遇之種種難題。魏晉士人在亂世中建構出玄學思維，以一種溝通有、無的思維以立身，並以一種處於材與不材、界於有意無意之態度以應世，形成當時特殊的思想與文化內涵。
