本書凡分四輯，第一輯乃串連變文、梵典、《西遊記》及其英譯本的修訂版的論釋而成，梳理了翻譯與演義的互動。第二輯分論明末傳入中國的歐洲文學，以及這些由拉丁文譯入的文本對中國文學文化的影響，包括「文學」今義的形成、西學和中國傳統說部的聯繫，以及西學在中國傳統善書文化中的角色，繼而追索荷馬由明入清的傳播網路。第三輯所收者係作者原《中西文學因緣》各文，但訂正補充的幅度甚大。輯中從英國浪漫主義與中國庭園觀的淵源起述，經莎士比亞入華與蘇曼殊中譯拜倫的前塵，再及傅斯年、老舍、毛姆、蕭伯納、奧登與海明威和中國的聯繫，把清末迄1930、1940年代中國文人對外國文學的想像表露無遺，又從文本分析入手，將歐美文學大家的中國想像也盡情揭露。第四輯回到翻譯研究，分論金隄譯《尤利西斯》在文體翻譯上的成敗，以及中國「龍」字譯成英文“dragon”的來龍去脈。本書雖為中外文學關係論稿，但時序分明，「史稿」的況味隱約可見。
