《南海日记》全书分为上下二册，文字60万字，图片700多幅。 上册是作者10次赴南海各个岛屿的拍摄、日记，和对祖祖辈辈航行在南中国海海域进行捕捞作业老船长的采访，记录了船长们带着祖辈流传下来的《更路簿》文字书准确地航行到南海的每个岛屿上，并远赴新加坡、菲律宾、印度尼西亚等国家进行渔获贸易的经历和见闻。 下册主要记录了对1974年1月19日中国和越南在西沙群岛发生的海战过程中18位阵亡军人家属的采访，和在1988年3月14日负责指挥在南沙群岛和越南发生海战的指挥官陈伟文将军，现任南海舰队中将杨志亮，曾任南海舰队政治部副主任、少将陈俨的采访，以及作者远赴海外对美国国防部、法国荣军院、日本舰船机构的采访，以这些真实的人物讲述来了解南海问题的争议现状以及历史依据。
