本書立足於近代中國世俗化轉型的歷史背景，透過對五四時期新道德觀的研究，試圖回應如下問題： 第一，當功利與快樂成為這一時期新道德觀的基礎，五四時期是否提供了現代道德的價值標準？還是因為價值超越性的喪失，導致了中國社會的道德相對主義？ 第二，從另一個角度來看，如果說，新教改革以來的西方現代社會，透過分離德性倫理與規範倫理，以期應對世俗時代的價值多元化挑戰，那麼，在五四時期的新道德觀當中，德性與倫理之間又形成了怎樣一種關係？ 在五四過去將近一個世紀的今天，透過對近代中國思想史的「重新問題化」和對五四新道德觀的自我理解，或許有助於我們更深刻地把握世俗時代的價值命題，為多元現代性賦予更加豐富的內涵。【秀威資訊科技股份有限公司製作】
