Себастьян Бах был любимейшим композитором Одоевского с ранней юности и до конца дней. Он был его «учебною книгой» и постоянной радостью и наслаждением. Под датой 12 декабря 1864 г. он записывает в своем дневнике о впечатлении от сюиты Баха: «Точно ходишь в галерее, наполненной Гольбейном и А. Дюрером» (Литературное наследство. Т. 22–24. М., 1935, с. 188).
